Outdoor Maternity Photography Ideas

Nothing says motherhood quite like making mother nature your backdrop. On a perfect day, you won’t need props to make your maternity photography session a success because the elements will do just as well.

All you have to do is let down that pregnancy hair, put on minimum makeup and pose for your beauty shot.

Here are some ideas you could incorporate for your next maternity photo op.

Wood Nymph

The nymph theme works only as long as you are able to make yourself the focal point, so wear something non-woody.

A color that’s not a shade of green or brown. Bright colors work well, although maternity photographers can easily achieve that with the HSL panel after the shoot.

The point is to saturate you into focus in contrast to a weaker, duller tree-drop.

Multi-Dimensional Frame

Use autumn to its full advantage by letting it frame you from all sides. Leave the orange trees at the back because they will be just as fierce out of focus.

You can display depth using grass as your front frame. Just stand there and let it hug your ankles. Let nature foreground you like no composition can. Wear something that matches the sky or choose white for the occasion.

Primary Shades

While primary colors are blue, red, and yellow, it’s often debated whether green shouldn’t be included in this category. After all, plants don’t get that color by mixing blue and yellow. It has to do with light.

Outdoor photography requires natural light, and what better way to show that in all its glory than to go with its shades. Select a venue where there are red, blue, and yellow blooms. If there is any missing, make up for that with your outfit.

Outdoor Swing

It doesn’t take much to wrap some green around a couple of rope swings and pass it off as climbing trellis. If you know a place with a tree swing, by all means, go for it. As far as outdoor props go, it’s pretty hard to top this find.

Wear subtle colors for this one, bring in your partner, have them push the swing while you sit or stand on it. The maternity photographer could use many tricks like narrow apertures and rapid shutters to catch you vividly in motion or your silhouette against a setting sun.
