5 Tips for Adding Pizzazz to Maternity Photography

There is no middle ground with belly shots. They are either Beyoncé-good or just way too over the top. Therefore, it’s good to follow the trend, but don’t cut corners by bypassing professional photography completely. You need that extra bit of experience to go the extra mile.

Here are some tips to use on your upcoming pregnancy photoshoot.

1.    Cradle Your Baby Bump

At some point in our lives, we’ve all struggled with hand placement. Should I clasp them behind my back or front? Will a ‘peace’ sign do? Ugh, just Photoshop them out!

Lucky for you, the whole point of maternity photography is to draw attention to your growing belly. All you have to do is put one hand at the top and one at the bottom.

2.    Pose with Siblings

Often, when first and last-born children find out they are about to have a younger sibling, their first reaction is reluctance. They don’t want to share the attention.

It’s important to make them feel included in your pregnancy journey. Therefore, like Beyoncé, have them participate in the maternity photoshoot.

Hold their hand while you cradle your bump, or give them your full attention and let the photographer figure out how to draw attention to your belly.

3.    Be Yourself

Maternity shoots are a family effort when someone is tasked to make you smile and laugh for the camera.

A self-conscious mother won’t do, so artifice is all but removed from the studio. The partner is asked to make funny faces or crack jokes to lighten you up, and that’s when the photographer gets their money shot.

4.    Couple Shoots

Maternity photography may not be as much about your partner as the pregnant you, but they are accompanying you in this labor of love.

So, pose with them, too. Have them touch your bump or put their arms around you from the back. You can also go for fun shots like having your partner stand with you holding a football at the same level as your belly.

5.    Make Yourself Comfortable

Expecting mothers find it hard to sit without a thigh gap, and they may not see it flattering to pose in that position.

They usually prefer to stand but can also recline, bend one knee, or extend one leg. Basically, whatever they feel at home with and let the photographer take care of the angles.
