4 Tips for Photographing Your Uncooperative Toddler

You might be familiar with the experience: you hire someone to do a baby photoshoot, but your child isn't settling down for even a minute. Eventually, the session ends, and the baby photographer has to leave without taking all the great photos you had in mind.

While you may not have been able to get your money's worth out of that photoshoot, here are some tips that'll help you get the required poses from your baby next time out:

1.     Make Playing A Part of It

You may find yourself thinking that playing during the newborn photoshoot is just a waste of time, but it’ll help calm the kids down and make them familiar with the environment. So,pick a location for the kids where they can play for a bit in between shots.

It would help if you also were getting involved in the playing. That's not to say that you should roll around in the dirt with them, just that being fun and playful during the process might make the kids feel more comfortable, and they might respond better.

2.     Let Them Be Involved

One of the things most people know about kids is that they don't obey orders. You might be asking them to do one thing in a stern voice, and they can be off doing something different.

But if you ask them to be a part of it and make it feel like a group project of sorts, they might get more involved. They might like to look at the camera or decide on a few of their poses.

3.     Don’t Tire Them Out

Once kids get tired, they get fussy, and managing them becomes even more difficult. Imagine being out there on location, without the required shots were taken, and a sleepy child who wants to go to bed.

Plan your timing according to your child's sleep pattern, and make sure to get some usable material before your kid is exhausted. Once he/she starts showing signs of fatigue, it's time to pack it up.

4.      Keep Them Busy

Not every great photo has to be of your child looking at the camera. You should bring along an activity that he/she enjoys and let them get busy with it.

What would you rather have, a photo of your child sadly looking at the camera, or one where he/she is busy and happy in their activity. It can be anything, from a favorite toy to an item that you know will distract them.
